About UsShoemaker Country is a family business, comprised of Tom and Susan Shoemaker and their two sons John and Michael. A creative and energetic staff joins them in what has become a unique and innovative design center in the heart of Historic Ellicott City, Maryland. The original shop, located at 8185 Main Street, is smaller, more rustic and houses the on-site workroom where some of the hand-finishing of custom-built pieces is done. This store features hand-crafted tin stars, reproduction and antique furniture as well as selected gifts and accessories. The larger shop, located at 8095 Main Street, is the design store. Upholstered furniture, artwork, lamps, French soaps, selected giftware, books, antiques and textiles are in abundance. Samples of larger custom-made pieces of furniture are showcased in this store. The design and production of custom-made furniture is a well-known part of Shoemaker Country. Beginning with farm table style dining tables, an ever-increasing offering of custom-designed pieces has delighted the discerning homeowner and interior designer. Armoires, coffee tables, headboards, kitchen islands, linen presses, sideboards, desks and benches are among the most popular custom pieces. Customers can select from cherry, poplar, walnut and reclaimed woods for building materials; finishes include various paints, stains with or without different levels of distressing. Customers are encouraged to bring their ideas as well as dimensions and photographs/pictures of pieces they are looking for to our showroom store at 8095 Main Street. There is no charge for working in the shop with our designers. Custom orders take on average twelve weeks to complete.
HistoryShoemaker Country has its roots in the love of American country furniture. Back when primitive farm tables could be had for a song, Tom and Susan Shoemaker began collecting cupboards, tables, architectural remnants, crocks, etc. As with many collectors, their abundance of great finds led them to become antique dealers. After years of setting up at antique shows and markets in the mid-Atlantic region, they decided to open a shop at the Oella Mill, just outside of the Historic District of Ellicott City in Maryland. Years later, an opportunity arose to open a shop right on Main Street of the Historic District of Ellicott City. In September of 2001, the Shoemakers went ahead with their plans to set up shop at 8185 Main Street in Historic Ellicott City, which is now their country store. This location continues to be a strong part of the Shoemaker Country business, with much thanks to the patronage of our customers. Quickly, it became evident that the country store had been utilized to its limits, so in November of 2003, the Shoemakers opened the showroom store at 8095 Main Street. This allowed larger pieces of furniture, both ones purchased and ones custom built. In January 2006, the second floor of the showroom store at 8095 Main Street opened up to the public as an expanded design store. Today, Shoemaker Country occupies nearly 9,000 sq. ft. of retail and design space between the two stores in Historic Ellicott City. "Good things for today's homes & gardens" has become the standard for all that we do. |
